Spanish Entry Doors

by

It could be that your home is similar in some ways to a Spanish style house. If that’s the case, you may want to have Spanish entry doors to cement that image for those who visit your home. There are a couple of options when deciding to change the look of your entry doors.

Many Spanish doors are oversized. The typical door is 6 foot 8 inches tall, Spanish doors can either be larger or wider than a normal door, some being over 8 feet high. To get the look you want you would have to do major reconstruction of your doorway. Consider carefully if this is an option you’d like to take to get the Spanish entry door that you’re dreaming of.

Perhaps the door you have is simple and non-descript, absolutely nothing like the image you have of what a Spanish entry door would look like. You can replace the door with an antique Spanish door, purchase a reproduction door, or paint your current door to look Spanish.

If you are able to find an antique door – one that is large, rustic, made of wood, and possibly has wrought iron strapping – expect to pay a good bit. Authentic Spanish doors most likely won’t be cheap. Of course, you’re welcome to see what you can find, but don’t say you haven’t been warned.

A cheaper alternative to an antique door is to find reproduction doors that you like. Many door manufacturers will create custom doors that should cost considerably less than authentic doors. You may also be able to find ready-made doors that have the look you desire.

Besides being made of wood, which can warp and discolor due to sunlight, today’s Spanish entry doors can be made from fiberglass or steel. They can be finished to resemble high-grade wood doors that you desire. You can even get reproduction doors made with faux wrought iron elements.

Just in case reproduction Spanish entry doors are out of your price range, you may be able to find a less expensive door that resembles a Spanish style door. There are kits on the market now that will allow you to paint your current door with faux wood grain. This will give the impression that you have a rustic hacienda style door rather than one you bought from your local home improvement store.

Having an authentic, antique Spanish entry door is the dream of most homeowners of haciendas or Spanish style houses. When you can’t find or afford the door of you dreams, remember that there are other options. You can still get the look of a Spanish entry door without having to pay the high price for an authentic one.
